It’s Melbourne Cup Day, although its effects can be felt three states away; it’s the Race That Stops the Nation for about three and a half minutes (3 minutes 20 seconds this year); it’s about the worst day that I could decide to go job hunting.
I ran into a friend in Queen Street putting his bet in, and in between discussion of favourites, barrier advantages and trifectas, I mentioned that I found cover letters quite fun to write. Research the business – most businesses have a website with at least a rudimentary ‘about us’ section. Mine this section for keywords that you can expand in your letter e.g. ‘premium service’, ‘community philosophy’, ‘bubbly personalities’. Alternatively, these keywords will be provided in the job advertisement. Write the keywords down on a piece of paper and group by theme.
